Access to nature is critical for supporting the  holistic well-being of children. In the District, many children lack access to safe, community-focused green spaces or opportunities to engage in healthy, nature-based programming. This lack of access is due to inequitable resource distribution in schools and across neighborhoods in DC. These disparities impact our communities’ socio-emotional, physical, and communal health. City Blossoms gardens and programs are tangible solutions grounded in community collaboration that connect our children to the natural world.

What We Do

City Blossoms uses our unique model of community engagement built on four key areas of focus: healthy living habits, community development, environmental education, and artistic expression. City Blossoms' programming is tailored to meet the unique needs of the communities we collaborate with. We develop multi-year partnerships with other community-based organizations and schools and incorporate direct feedback from our participants, to support the growth and sustainability of each project. Each garden reflects the creativity and passion of the children and youth who use them.

Our philosophy: cultivating accessible green spaces where children and youth engage with the environment and each other creates a path for our young people to become the next generation of stewards and community advocates.

City Blossoms' Anti-Racism and Equity Committee, made up of staff and board members, created a Theory of Change to explain how City Blossoms is addressing the core problem of the inequitable access to safe, engaging, community-led green spaces and garden-based education across Washington, DC.
